Beach Education

We were lucky enough to go to the beach this week and learn how to keep ourselves safe in and out of the water. There are 6 rules to follow at the beach and we had to split into groups and act out what it would look like to follow each of the rules. We got to look around the surf club and see the surfboards, IRBs and kayaks. The best part came at the end of the day when we got to spend half an hour in the water on boogie boards and in the waves!

Akeake Camp

Akeake Camp

On Monday, the Akeake team embarked on their camp to the Woodend Christian Camp. Spending the first day with our entire syndicate playing mini golf, team building activities like trying 3meter high wall, and on the aero-jump. We were being challenged and having fun. When the year 3 left at 2:30pm, the year 4s set up camp before tracking up and down the huge water slide. The day continued with year 4's screaming down the flying fox, racing around of go-kart and accurately shooting arrows and air rifles. It had been an action-packed first day.

Day 2 saw the year 4's orienteering, volleyball tournament and a huge clean-up. We had a fantastic time and can't wait until our next camp next year. A huge thank you to all the parents that attended and helped out over the two days.

We had such a great time sharing our learning spaces with our grandparents on Grandparents Day.  Thank you to everyone who attended.  The children really loved having you here.  And a huge WELL DONE to our Akeake children who got up on stage and performed a Jump Jam routine.  They had been preparing for a few weeks for this special occasion and they did a wonderful job. Ka Pai everyone!

Keep Calm and Drink Milk!

This term our Inquiry is based around milk and dairy products. Part of our immersion is looking at where milk comes from and how it is turned into different dairy products.

I bet you don't know where milk comes from. It's not the supermarket! We get milk from cows. Farms all over New Zealand have hundreds and thousands of cows which they send to the milking sheds every day. Each cow can produce 25 Litres of milk each day - that's enough for 100 cups of milk! Once the cows have been milked, they get treated to a yummy dessert drink full of nutrients to keep them strong and healthy.

We made comic strips to help us understand the process cows go through in order to get milked.

Hydroponics

Way back in week 1 we got given a problem that we had to solve for Technology: "There is a shortage of food. You have been selected as part of a team to design a system that will grow plants over winter. As your living space is small it needs to be portable and compact."

We watched videos, looked at pictures and researched the best way to create our systems. We have spent a long time preparing our designs and materials to make our hydroponics systems. We chose hydroponics because we could keep them inside (over winter) and they could be kept inside a bottle (small and compact).

Writing in Room 7,8,9

We in Room 7,8,9 have been practicing some different skills in our writing by re-reading and re-working our writing.

Beep! Beep! “Agent Animal you are needed immediately for  a mission in the snowy mountains” squeaked a voice from Lila’s bracelet. Lila wasn’t only an ordinary school girl she was also a secret spy agent! Lily raced towards her invisible rocket ship and started the countdown 5 4, 3, 2 ,1… blast off! Lily flew off into the deep blue sky.
“Almost there” screamed Lila in excitement. Suddenly there was a big, big bump!
Emily

You may wonder I was out past midnight. I must start at the beginning. My name is Tom. I was walking from soccer practice and I saw something unusual. I was staring at a dark mansion where a empty spot was.
“I should tell Noah,” I thought. I ran to Noah’s house and told him.
“We should go out at night,” Noah said.
“We should go out when!?”, I screamed.
“At night”, he said.
“Alright, i’ll go” I said questioning it. “But not to late!”
Brody

Dory, the blue and yellow fish kept asking where the orange fish was at. Dory eventually found him. The orange fish named Urple with her friend Durple. Then it went pitch black! Durple lit up place, before they found themselves inside...

Explore Time in our new building.

It's the end of the first week in our new building and the children are loving our new spaces.
Todays Explore Time was a huge success with Storybird writing on laptops, games, crafts, dancing and some miniball.
Good fun was had by all and it was a lovely way to end the week.

Music!

Rooms 10, 11 and 12 were in charge of running the school assembly this week. We had MCs, technicians and lights people helping behind the scenes. It was a busy assembly with lots of certificates to give out and notices to listen to.

We were especially proud of our music performance that Mrs Osgood has been preparing us for!

Geometry

This week we have been learning about geometry which is a fancy word for 2D and 3D shapes. We have been learning the names of shapes, and finding things in our world that are shaped like cones, cubes, pyramids and other 3D shapes.

We have also been learning how to draw nets for shapes so that we can fold them up and make them. There are some cool songs on Youtube to help us learn about shapes. Check out the videos below!
