A special visit from Fanimals!

How lucky are we in Akeake?
We had a wonderful visit from some very awesome guests at school this morning.
Jess and Molson from the TV show Fanimals paid us a visit as a special treat!

The children were all very excited to give Molson a pat and to get to meet Jess up close.
We have some very big Fanimals fans in our team!
Jess signed a postcard for all of our children and some were even lucky enough to get a hug.

We would like to say a very big THANK YOU to Jess, Molson, Rosie and Jo for coming out to see us today.
We really appreciate the love and kindness coming our way!

Fanimals is on TV2 each week day at 4pm.

A wonderful time

Akeake is back from two fun-filled busy days at camp. The year 4s had an overnighter and the yr 3s joined them again on Tuesday.

Can one highlight be picked?

The general answer is a great big NO.

A big thank you to
our wonderful parent helpers
for your support in making this camp
a brilliant one for everyone.

Akeake Tennis Hot Shots

On Thursday all the children in Akeake had some tennis coaching.
We had heaps of fun learning some new skills and it was great to see the children being brave
and trying something new.  Well done to all out tamariki who had a go!

TENNIS HOT SHOTS is a world class tennis programme for 3-12year olds.  It is a safe, fun way to get into tennis.
Children are encouraged to work together or independently on tasks to learn the game of tennis - how to serve, rally and score.

If your child is interested in giving tennis a go you can email

Sun Smart - Our Skin!

In Akeake, we are learning about how to be smart in the sun. The first thing we had to do was some learning about our skin. We had to use red, brown, yellow and white paint to create some natural-looking skin tones. Our biggest challenge was trying to recreate our own skin tone! Once we had our colours, we fingerprinted them onto a tree template. Then we reflected on how everyone's skin tone is slightly different, but that doesn't change how we treat them.

Craig Smith - Wonky Donkey Author

This morning, years 1-6 gathered in the hall for a very special visit from Craig Smith, the author of Wonky Donkey and other very cool books. He shared his brand new book called Grizzly Bear and told us it would be in the shops to buy next week.

He also sang the Wonky Donkey, My Daddy Ate an Apple, Kaha the Kea, Eating, The Scariest Thing in the Garden and he sang the alphabet backwards!

Craig brought some friends along with him. Kaha the Kea was a crowd favourite.

He also brought some puppets to help tell the stories of his books.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori

We have been busy celebrating Maori Language week in Paneke.
One of the things we did was learn how to ask and answer: How are you?

We spent time with a buddy to practice asking how they were and we used the
new feeling words that we had learnt to answer.

We also had a go at doing our Te Reo in Sign Language!

Sun and Shadows

In Akeake we have been learning about space this term. We have been reading about different planets, writing about Uranus and even designing our own planets! In Kōpapa we learnt a bit about the sun. We know that the sun is a burning ball of gas, it is a star, it gives us light and heat, and it creates shadows on the ground. We did an experiment on the court to investigate our shadows. We discovered that our shadows change size depending on where the sun is in the sky.

Swimming Lessons at Kaiapoi Pool

Over the last two weeks Akeake children have been having swimming lessons at the Kaiapoi Pool.  Our last day was all about water safety and we had a great time learning about what to do if we fall into the water in our clothes. An amazing opportunity for all of us.
